Tom Wilkinson, III, passed away Wednesday, July 21, 2021 in Mount Vernon, Texas. He was the only child of R.T. Wilkinson, Jr. and Pearl (Killingsworth) Wilkinson. Tom was the grandson of Judge R.T Wilkinson and Lela (Nelson)Wilkinson and C.W. Killingsworth and Annie (Cabell) Killingsworth.
Tom was born on May 11, 1939 on East Main St., Mount Vernon in the Crutcher Hospital. He and his parents moved to Dallas in 1940 where he later graduated Highland Park High School. Tom went on to attend SMU obtaining two degrees a B.A. and M.L.A. after finishing at SMU Tom furthered his education by obtaining two degrees a. M.A. and M.L.S. from the University of Texas in Austin.
Tom began his college teaching career at SMU, later teaching at the Dallas County Community College. Upon moving back to Mount Vernon, Tom began teaching at Northeast Texas Community College retiring in 1997 as Professor Emeritus.
Tom has been very active in the Mount Vernon Community serving on the following Boards, Franklin County Library, FCHA, and FCAA; he was also a major patron of Mount Vernon Music, the Old Jail Art Museum and the initiator of the Mount Vernon Plaza Beautification Project.
Tom was survived by his cousins, JoAnn Hale and husband, Darrell of Iowa Park, TX and their children, Jacalyn Lane and Doug Hale; Lynda Heatly of Albany, TX and her children, Leigh Lowe and J.T. Heatly; Kay Meixner and husband, Moody of Keller, TX and their children, Kristina Mugg and Wes Meixner; Mary Ann Daniel of San Diego, CA; Tom Daniel of La Jolla, CA; and Bob Daniel of Snowmass, CO and numerous friends to cherish memory.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to any of the charities Tom so loved, the Franklin County Genealogical Society or the Mount Vernon Cemetery Association.
Private services were held at Mount Vernon City Cemetery in the Wilkinson family plot under the direction of Collvins Memorial Funeral Home.
